I hope you’re perusing through the section of books about Multiple Sclerosis, and now you’re here. It is not my intention to tap dance around sensitive subject material. I won’t pretend that reading Our Blessing… Multiple Sclerosis is going to make you feel better.
I am hoping that reading about some of my thoughts and feelings, you are able to relate to what I have experienced. I want you to see that I truly understand what you are faced with. I want you to laugh a little, and maybe even cry; whatever works for you.
The disease is what it is; you can’t change that. I believe it’s a choice to learn to live well with it. The most important thing to remember is you are not alone. Don’t fight the battle alone, but be sure your daily decisions about handling life with MS is to always fight the battle.

Thom DeMeo instantly captured my attention, and the candor in his story continued to pull me back until the last page of this well-written book. Now, even several days later, I continue to think about his words. It's a rare book that makes me stop in my tracks and take the time to reflect on it before I can go on to read something else. The author explains that the main purpose of his book is to reach and connect with fellow MS patients. I do not have MS, nor do I personally know anyone who does. Although the basic premise of this story is undeniably about facing MS, I trust that you can substitute any adversity in your life, and the inspiration holds strong and true. Intentionally or not, this author speaks directly to all readers.Several of the lessons in this story continue to connect with me personally. He writes, "Our time on earth is short. There is no time to waste if you have this disease. If you sit around, and don't do anything until you feel good, you're never getting anything accomplished. I don't roll that way!" Substitute any adversity in your life for his disease. He makes me wonder... Do I let my challenges break me down, or do I face my challenges with the determination that DeMeo faces his MS?
He adds, "I have learned that I have to be careful with hindsight. It can be a double edged sword. If you look too far in the past, it's dwelling on the past. If you look at yourself for just the right amount of time, that's called self-reflection." The author pushes me to face many questions in my own life... When I contemplate my past, am I responding to it as an anchor or as a spark? It takes a truly gifted writer to affect readers to the degree of personal self-reflection.
DeMeo has the rare ability to make you cry and then throws something in there that makes you laugh through your tears. He speaks with profound honesty, flaws and all. His self-deprecating style presents the complex topic of MS in an entertaining and heartwarming way. Thom DeMeo has a unique and sincere, charismatic writing style. I hope this is just the beginning of his writing career and look forward to more motivational books by this author.

Our BlessingMultiple Sclerosis edition by Thom DeMeo Betina DeMeo SelfHelp eBooks Reviews
I read this book primarily because I have a friend who has MS. I knew him before he was diagnosed and witnessed his transition from a normal, healthy guy to the victim of this insidious disease. So I wanted to better understand what he is dealing with.
I learned a lot from reading Our Blessing. A most important fact is that each person's symptoms are unique to that person and one individual's experiences do not usually translate into another's.
Mr. DeMeo revealed other aspects of MS in a very personal manner. The writing style is simple and conversational. It is a short book and an easy read. However, the author makes a few fundamental errors in organization. For example, he refers to The Outfit numerous times but does not define it (as the New Jersey State Police) until page 105. There is a bit too much "inside baseball" about the NJSP and his structuring of ideas and the sequence of events sometimes suffers. It's not Shakespeare. Yet, every so often he would turn a phrase that would show literary promise and make me smile. (...a person must be able to cope with anything ...served upon their plate. You don't have to like it; you just have to eat it!) and (...sit next to me on a park bench and I would be Forrest Gump!).
Having said that, if one can imagine sitting on a bench with DeMeo and listening to him just talk to you...that is what reading this book is like. He speaks from the heart with genuine emotion. Writing this book was no doubt a cathartic experience for the author as he confesses and apologizes for his failings both before and after contracting MS.
While symptoms vary, anyone who knows or loves someone with the disease or has it themselves would benefit by the insights provided in Our Blessing. The primary message and central theme come through very clearly between the grumbling complaints and protests. That message is simply this; MS changed the direction of DeMeo's life. He found himself doing things he would never have attempted had he remained fully healthy. And he loves these new aspects of his life on the "alternate path" MS forced him to take. He is a better husband and father and is at peace with his extended family. He is embarking on a "second career" that he truly loves and has written this book. And he has proven to himself and others he can summon the courage to face the future with MS. These are truly his blessings and even Shakespeare cannot claim to have achieved that.
This is a 4 1/2 star book but primarily on the strength of the "lessons" and the value of the motivational message, I rounded up!

Thom Demeo the author is my nephew he is a very gifted man with a wonderful family, ex New Jersey State Police officer ex Air Force sky Cop.
This is the story of Thom (also written by him). It's a story about being struck by lightening (i.e., Multiple Sclerosis or MS), and how powerful the mind is in explaining away serious symptoms (been there mysef) with stress. It's also a story about how powerful the mind is (when you have MS the body doesnt count for much to help any longer) in recovering at least mentally. It is a positive book that we can all learn from and in particular how to turn devastation into something with a positive outlook. Thom, your book made me laugh but it also made me CRY. A very powerful and deeply touching autobiography. Buy it and read it.
